TALEN (Transcription Activator-Like Effector Nucleases) technology is a new gene targeting technology. TALENs bind and cleave DNA in pairs, and their binding specificity is determined by customizable arrays of polymorphic amino acid repeats in the TAL effectors.
Compared to other gene targeting technologies such as zinc-finger nucleases (ZFNs) and meganucleases, TALEs offer the researcher more latitude in selecting potential DNA targets, ease in design, and provide levels of specificity on par or better than the aforementioned technologies.
